We had this romantic idea of exploring the interior of a mountain with a torch light in hand, big moving shadows, cool, moist air, silence, and the echoing sound of water dropping somewhere. So we checked the whole area until we found a cave that would let us in on a Monday. After having paid our fare at a lonely ticket booth on an empty parking lot, the guide asked us to wait just a few minutes for some more people to come. Little did we know that he was expecting a bus load full of half-drunk tourists!
So we rushed through the cave trying to escape from the noisy crowd and their flashing cameras, and trying to ignore the cheesy illumination, the chlorine smell, and wellness music aired from speakers hidden behind stalagmites and stalctites.
Romantic ideas seem to be unfit for today’s vulgarity… they are better kept in the realm of memories and dreams.
